  • A recent power bill, or your rough annual kWh usage if you know it. This tells installers how much you actually use and when.

How the matching works, plainly

Here's the whole process, start to finish, with nothing left out.

2. We match you to installers who genuinely cover your area

This is where most lead sites quietly fall down. They fire your details out to whoever pays them, regardless of whether that company even works in your region. We don't. That regional match matters more than people realise. Your lines company sets the rules and timeframes for connecting solar and getting export approval, and an installer who already does plenty of jobs on your network knows that paperwork cold. A national outfit parachuting in does not.

How we actually make our money: when we match you with an installer and that installer wins your business, they pay us a referral fee. You pay us nothing, ever. That's deliberate, and it's the bit worth understanding, because it shapes everything about how we behave.

We only get paid if you're happy enough with an installer to go ahead with them. That means we have a direct interest in matching you with companies that do good work and quote fairly, not whoever pays the most. A lead site that profits from selling your details to as many buyers as possible has the opposite incentive: churn you fast, sell you wide, move on. We'd rather earn less from happy homeowners than more from annoyed ones. It's a better business and, frankly, a nicer way to live.

How we vet the installers

"Vetted" gets thrown around loosely, so here's what we actually look for before an installer can be matched with you:

  • A real, traceable track record in New Zealand, with installs we can point to and customers we can ask.
  • Properly qualified electrical workers doing the connection work, as required under New Zealand's electrical regulations.
  • Clear, written warranties on workmanship, not just the manufacturer's panel warranty.
  • Membership of, or alignment with, industry bodies such as the Sustainable Energy Association of New Zealand (SEANZ), whose code of conduct sets a baseline for fair dealing.
  • Pricing that sits in a sane range. If someone is wildly cheaper than everyone else, there's usually a reason buried in the spec, and we'd rather not put that in front of you.

We're not perfect, and no vetting process is. But we treat a complaint about an installer as a serious thing, and a pattern of them means that installer stops getting matched. Your feedback after the fact genuinely shapes who we work with.

What this won't do

We'd rather under-promise. A few honest limits:

  • Quotes are estimates until someone's been on your roof. A site visit can change the design once an installer sees your actual shading, roof condition, and switchboard. That's normal and it's a good thing.
  • Solar won't zero a grid-connected winter bill. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling, not advising.   • If you rent, or you're moving within a couple of years, the maths often doesn't stack up. We'll say so rather than match you anyway.
